2006 Union County GOP
Christmas Party
Our annual Christmas Party, held
December 7th at Daniels Steak
House in Hiawassee, was a huge success.
Approximately sixty-five or more people
attended, and the banquet room was full to
capacity. Not only were many Union County
Republicans present, but also Kevin and
Melanie Harris from Fannin County, Rubin
and Nighta Davis from Towns County, and
Michelle Honaker, former Miss Waikiki
Teen, and daughter of Chuck Honaker.
Michelle came all the way from Hawaii! If
we keep growing like we have been, maybe
next year will be an international event!
It was a night filled with traditional
Christmas music as well as popular songs
from the 50’s era. This musical
extravaganza was produced, directed, and
of course starred our own multi-talented
Jimmy Carter (aka Perry Como) singing a
variety of tunes. Also David and Lynn
Melick sang a duet of “I Got You Babe”
and from the look in their eyes this must
be their song. Lynn also sang a
solo of “Johnny Angel.” Chuck and
Michelle Honaker sang a duet of “Silver
Bells” and Michelle sang a solo of “Santa
Baby.” Other solos included “The End
Of The World” by the young Jessica
Craig, “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” by
Nancy Ellingsworth, and “Little Things
Mean A Lot” by Gale Filler. And of
course everyone joined in on “Silent
Night.” Thanks to all these singers for
helping make this an enjoyable night.
Patty Bertuna, daughter of Mel and Sue
Prime won the door prize, a large remote
control toy truck, just what she needed.
Special thanks to Eloise Barkett, Beverly
Carter’s mother, for providing the many
Poinsettias that were also given away
afterwards. Also a special thanks to Jimmy
and Beverly Carter for all their hard work
in putting this together and furnishing
complimentary CDs of the original
recordings to all attending.
The weather outside was frightful. The
temperature was near or below freezing.
Winds were high and just a wisp of snow
was blowing in the air hinting of winter
to come and the Christmas Season. But
inside was truly delightful and filled
with the spirit of Christmas, a spirit
that included good food, excellent music
and song, and, most importantly the joy of
fellowship and celebration that only
Christmas can bring. A good time was had
by all.
I simply cannot end without again
noting that this party was held on
December 7th which is also
Pearl Harbor Day. Over 2400 military
service members lost their lives on that
day and the average age of those killed
was only 23. So, yes we enjoyed ourselves
at our party and I sincerely wish you all
a Merry Christmas, but please continue to
remember the sacrifices made by others
that allow us the freedom to enjoy this
time of year by supporting the troops and
their families.
